Chapter Fourteen

Making the Cut

Paige’s suspicion about Carly was confirmed as she arrived in the ER Saturday morning. It was Memorial Day weekend, and she was assigned to work the string of dayshifts from Saturday to Monday. She was relieving Reese, who worked the overnights.

“How was the night?” she asked a red-eyed Reese.

“I got my ass whipped, and on top of that, I think I’m getting a cold. Or maybe it’s just allergies. But I’m sniffling, and my throat is sore, and my head hurts.”

She held up a hand and stepped back a foot. “Take some Vitamin C. Fast.”

“Is that big bottle still in the closet in the doctors’ lounge?”

“I believe so.” She hoped it was still there. She’d bought it just for such occasions and hoped no one had taken it.

“I don’t know if I’m going to make it to Carly’s party tomorrow. I’ll see how I feel, but I think sleep is more important than one of those famous margaritas.”

She tried to hide her surprise and thought she recovered well. “Yes. The only mixed drink you should have is a Vitamin Water.”

“I think you’re right.”

“I’ll see you in twenty-four hours. But listen—if you need me to come in a few hours early tomorrow, let me know. Five to three isn’t much harder than seven to three for me, but it might give you a little help with whatever you’re battling.”

Reese visibly brightened. “How about if I call you later? I should know in the next twelve hours which way this is going.”

“You got it.”

Reese didn’t have a single patient to sign out, so Paige went to work on the new ones. Her shift was much like Reese’s had been, crazy busy, and she didn’t have time to think about her morning conversation with Reese until she was changing in the physicians’ lounge afterward.

Carly was having a party, and Paige wasn’t invited. Not that she had any expectations—they weren’t best friends, after all. But they’d grown close in the three months they’d known each other, close enough that Carly might mention she was hosting a get-together for her college friends, like Reese. Something. Anything other than the silent treatment she’d been dealing with all week and the brush-off the day of the tournament in Hershey.

It was like a light switch had been flipped. One minute they’d been enjoying the tranquility of the Hershey Gardens, spending time as friends do. The next, Carly behaved like she barely knew Paige and couldn’t tolerate her. Since the tournament in Hershey, she had texted Carly several times. Finally, after about the fifth no-reply, she’d given up. Apparently, Carly wanted nothing to do with her.

What had happened? Had she somehow angered Carly? She had a little crush on her, but Carly didn’t know that. She had kept those feelings so closely guarded she wasn’t even sure of them herself. Sometimes she looked at Carly and felt…something. At other times, she was just a great friend, someone she connected with.

And, of course, she was married. When she was with Carly, she had to remind herself of that fact, because it was so easy to forget.
